On February 12th, 1947, people in Eastern Siberia witnessed the largest single meteorite fall, with over 23 million tons showering the area.
Thumbprint like depressions, ragged, twisted and distorted surfaces all occurred due to the break up of the meteorite at a low altitude and it not being subject to intense ablation that would otherwise smooth the surface.
